EGG 1938-2008

In case you don't play RPGs and/or you've just been living under a rock, I'm sad to announce that the Gawdfather of Hack, one of the co-creators of Dungeons & Dragons, died Tuesday some time in the early morning.

We were jokingly calling our tournament weekend coming up "Stogdillapooza", but in honor of Gary Gygax's passing we decided GaryCon Boise was more appropriate. It's also a bit of an homage to Knights of the Dinner Table (GaryCon was a homage to Gary Gygax originally anyway).

This is not a great picture, but I ordered a batch of large magnets using this picture. They'll be higher quality and cropped appropriately. The background is from one of the original D&D booklets, and the picture of the old EGG himself was lifted from Futurama (don't sue!). I spent a lot of time tweaking this photo...even altered his glasses to show some of the background.

It'll be good to get some of the gang in town to play and I'm sure we'll do a little reminiscing.
Growing up I tried so hard to play D&D. I got a taste of it here and there, but not until I was an "adult" (serving in the Air Force) did I truely get to play with any frequency. I enjoy HackMaster so much mostly because it reminds me of 1st Edition Dungeons & Dragons so much. Thinking back over the years of gaming...and (of course) glossing over the bad tables, I find it interesting that most of my friends I have now and thousands of hours of enjoyment can be traced back to Gary's efforts.
I'll be rolling some dice and knocking back at least one drink in your honor at GaryCon Boise.
